How do you know your saddle fits correctly? I rode in my saddle for quite sometime always thinking it fit my horse well. It wasn't until I went on a 4 day camping trip with some Tennessee Walker riders and had to do a posting trot to keep up. On day three I started noticing an area on my horse's back that looked swollen. When I got home the hairs started turning white and I knew for sure my saddle did not fit right. It is very hard to tell when all the leather is covering the tree and with a template fit over the withers you only get the wither measurement and you don't know how the bars are laying on the horse's back. Most of us never ride long enough and hard enough to really tell by riding if we have the right fit either. Our horse have a hard time telling us because we interpret that they are acting up or they just suffer in silence.
I am convienced that the only way you can get the right fitting tree for your horse is to fit the bare tree first then have the saddle built. When you can see the bare tree on your horse's back you can see that the bars are laying flat and the gullit is high enough and that the spread is correct so as not to pinch the shoulders. I think this is a great post. Sometimes when I write, I just let the flow of the words and information come out so much that I loose the purpose. Do you know if your saddle is fitting correctly? Do you know for sure you have it sitting in the correct position on your horse and that you have it cinched on your horse properly? It is very important to have a western saddle that fits correctly but you also need to know how to saddle your horse properly with that western saddle. Is your horses tack attached properly? When you take the bare tree and lay it on your horses back you can see exactly how the bars lay on the back. If it is too narrow you will see how the bottom of the bars look like they would dig into the back, if the bars are too wide you will see the top of the bars digging into the back. If the bars are too long you will see them bridge the back. When you set that saddle on a horses back you want to know the bars are flat so they will distribute the weight of the rider evenly across the back of the horse. If you look down the gullet you want to see good clearence from the withers of the horse. With the bare tree fitting you will know you have the best fit for your horse.
