In recent years they have come out with new materials to make horse tack. It was always made with leather but now they have come out with Beta and Biothane which are both synthetic man-made materials. For the most part they are easier to care for. No oiling or soaping as with leather, just a damp cloth and little effort is usually all it needs to get it clean and shinny. How does it last and wear? The look is different but nice. But I am rather partial to leather. It certainly does not smell like leather. Having not tried Beta or Beta Biothane I cannot comment if it holds up as well and lasts as long as leather. It is soft and pliable and feels good in your hands. Here is an article on my site that will tell you a bit more about these products. I love the Beta Biothane products. I'm primarily a trail rider and an unfullfilled endurance competitor. Beta is soft and comfortable against the horses skin. It is strong and easy to keep clean and I love the fittings and snaps which make it so easy to adjust and remove tack. The colors and overlays are great fun-there is no end to the customizing that you can do with the choices and bling available. If you are a traditionalist you can order black or brown(not so great)and I guess if you show you must have leather but everyone should have at least one great colored Beta Biothane bridle for the fun and carefree hacking around. - by Judy, 01-07-2009, 5:55 PM

In answer to the first comment: Both regular and translucent Biothane is a polyurethane-coated polyester webbing. The translucent Biothane has a coating that gives the color a brighter glimmer than regular Biothane. Beta Biothane is a polyvinyl-coated polyester webbing. It has the same qualities as regular Biothane but is softer and more flexible and has a more leather look and feel than regular Biothane. It is supposed to be a great product that many rave about. I do think that leather and the smell of leather is a part of horses and riding. Yet again, if I can get a few more rides instead of cleaning my tack, I would pick riding! Especially if I can get the same look, feel and durability and many times at a slightly lesser cost.
What kind of materials are used to make the beta and biothane? is that sort of technology going to be around a awhile? Traditional leather is in my humblest opinion is what riding is supposed to be about. the practice of caring for the leather is a key component to the whole experience of riding. I think that the switch no matter how convenient it may be takes away from the nostalgia. So, little more care in the leather adds to the experience of working with horses in the first place. I love them. I have had a beta bridle and reins for at least 3 years. All I do is wash it off twice a year. There are no cracks, worn spots, or anything to show wear. It is lightweight, flexible, durable, inexpensive, and easy to clean. What more is there? I would recommend it to anyone wanting those qualities. Mine is not pretty but that is my own fault. I got it as a spare bridle never thinking I would really use it. When the leather one broke, I started using it and have never gone back. The only thing I don't like about it is that I can't find them locally, I have to order. I really like to hold and see something before I buy it. Things are not always like their pictures.
